As Global Workplace Analytics reports, the percentage, the worldwide population of remote workers—discounting those who are self-employed—has grown by over 140% since 2005.
It’s clear that many people within the workforce are compelled by the idea of remote working, but is it the right choice for you? That’s a question that may only be answered by experimenting with working remotely, but that’s not to say you can’t get an idea of the benefits and disadvantages to adopting a remote working style.
So, let’s examine some of the most talked-about aspects of remote working jobs and evaluate the pros and cons of each!
Pro: With a remote working job, you have the flexibility to work at the times where you feel most productive, which is not limited to the typical 9-to-5 workday.
Con: Some remote workers struggle with the issue of continually staying disciplined and motivated when they don’t have colleagues nearby to keep them motivated. This is often remedied by keeping in touch with your colleagues online, but some remote workers find the added flexibility to be more problematic than beneficial.

Con: There is a risk of feeling isolated when you’re exclusively working from home. Some remote workers find that – even if they are actively in contact with their colleagues online – that they’re losing out on a real connection with their colleagues. Remote workers may also feel disconnected and out of the loop with what’s going on with their workplace, especially if their colleagues are office-based.
Pro: It’s likely if you’re working remotely, that you’re not going to have to deal with the kind of commute that office-based workers have to endure. This can often mean that you save hours of your week that would usually be spent travelling to and from work.
Con: For many people, there’s a clear line between their work and home lives, and they heavily associate a different headspace with each place. With remote working jobs, it’s quite common for this line to become blurred.
It’s important to also remember that just because you’re working remotely doesn’t mean you have to miss out on being around other people. Many remote workers thrive in co-working (sometimes referred to as hot desking) environments in which large numbers of people occupy an office space and work independently.
So, are remote working jobs worthy of the hype they’ve garnered of late? Well, it largely depends on your circumstances!
